The Two Ways to Get Medicare

1. Original Medicare

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance)
  • Part B (Medical Insurance)
  • Option to enroll in a separate Part D plan
  • Option to apply for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy

2. Medicare Advantage (Part C)

  • Alternative way to receive Medicare benefits through private insurance companies
  • May include prescription drug coverage
  • Typically operates with provider networks

How to Sign Up for Medicare

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birth month, and continues for three months after.

  • Enroll online through the Social Security Administration
  • Apply by phone
  • Visit your local Social Security office

If you have employer coverage, Special Enrollment Period rules may apply.

When to Consider Starting Social Security

  • Benefits may begin as early as age 62 (reduced amount)
  • Full Retirement Age varies by birth year
  • Delaying benefits up to age 70 may increase monthly payments
